Starting college can feel like standing at the edge of a map with no compass. Which classes do you take? How do you pay for it? What happens if life gets in the way? At SCC, you're not expected to figure it out alone. From the moment you apply, there's a team of people whose entire job is to help you get where you're going. Here's what that looks like.
Every Blackhawk gets connected with a Student Success Advocate. Think of your advocate as your home base. They help you plan your schedule, choose a program, stay on track toward graduation, and troubleshoot anything that comes up along the way. Struggling in a class? Thinking about switching majors? Not sure if you can make the next semester work financially? Your advocate is the first person to call.
And it's not a once-a-year conversation. Advocates check in throughout the semester, and you can reach out whenever you need to. If you're using SCC's Self Service portal to plan classes or check grades and you hit a snag, your advocate (or the Student Support Center at 319-208-5010) can walk you through it.
SCC uses a model called Guided Pathways, which is a fancy way of saying they've done the planning work so you don't have to guess. Instead of wandering through a course catalog hoping you're picking the right classes, you choose a pathway in a field that interests you, like healthcare, business, skilled trades, or liberal arts, and your advocate helps you see exactly what to take and when. If you change direction partway through, you don't lose all your credits. You just adjust the plan. The research backs this approach: students in guided pathways programs are more likely to stay enrolled, earn better grades, and graduate.
Not sure what pathway fits you? SCC has a career explorer tool on their website that matches your interests with real jobs, including salary ranges and local demand.
Student Services at SCC is more than advising. It's a whole network of offices working together:
Financial Aid helps you file your FAFSA, understand your award, and navigate scholarships, grants, and work-study. Affordable is one thing, but SCC also wants to make sure you understand exactly what you're paying for.
The Accessibility Office partners with students who have disabilities to set up accommodations so you have equal access to everything SCC offers. You can reach the Disability Services Coordinator at 319-208-5167.
TRIO is a federal program for students who could use a little extra support getting to graduation, whether that's first-generation college students, students from lower-income backgrounds, or students with disabilities.
PACE helps you map out your goals and build a concrete plan to reach them, academic or otherwise.
Personal Support and the Dean of Students are there when life gets heavy. Falling behind, dealing with something hard, or just needing someone to talk to are all valid reasons to reach out.
Housing and Dining, tutoring, the library, and the Help Desk (319-208-5087) round out the day-to-day resources that keep your life running while you study.
If you're a prospective student, the easiest first step is contacting Admissions:
West Burlington: 319-208-5155, text 319-250-7144, admissionswb@scciowa.edu
Keokuk: 319-313-1923, text 319-220-3266, admissionskeo@scciowa.edu
They'll walk you through applying, schedule a campus visit if you want one, and connect you with your Student Success Advocate once you're enrolled.
College works best when you have people in your corner. At SCC, those people are built into the experience, not an afterthought. Every Blackhawk has an advocate. Every question has an office. Every student has a path.
